Dernier & Hamlyn was established in 1888 by Louis Dernier and specialised in the production of high quality hand decorated lampshades using fine silks from France and China. Around 1900 it expanded its range by importing vases and figurines to make up complete lamps. It also worked with another manufacturer, Kerswell, Faulkner & Hamlyn to make shade carriers and set up a retail operation to supply the home.
By 1913 its range had extended and the company catalogue illustrated over 700 different lampshades and fittings, thirty of them in colour, a revolutionary approach for the time. The company changed its name to Dernier & Hamlyn in 1919. During both World Wars, Dernier & Hamlyn was involved in “war work” such as making precision parts for Spitfires, tanks and Bren Gun carriers and stitching parachutes in its lampshade workshops.
Since the war we have made and restored some of the most important historical and architecturally significant light fittings in existence in palaces, cathedrals and other public buildings.
Joint managing directors Jeremy Quantrill and Brian Spiking lead Dernier & Hamlyn’s operations with Jeremy in charge of commercial issues and Brian directing technical development.
