antique lamp shades
A brief History of Dernier & Hamlyn
From 1888

Starting out in a modest way, in 1888 Louis Dernier & Co started to make high quality hand decorated lampshades and lamps from fine silks and materials imported from France and China.

As the business grew and the company moved to Newman Street in 1903, an association which was to last for many was formed with another manufacturer Kerswell Faulkner & Hamlyn and a subsidiary company Hunter Electric Candle Lamp Ltd.

By 1913 customers included such names as Liberty and Maples and a 120-page catalogue with over 700 products was produced.

At the time Derniers employed over seventy people in the workrooms with another twelve in the studio producing hand painted lampshades and vases. An example of a service that would be hard to find today was a catalogue entry stating, "Any special order can be made and dispatched within 24 hours".

On the 23rd. June 1919 the companies amalgamated and Louis Dernier & Hamlyn Ltd was formed with William Last, Ernest Durand and Sidney Hamlyn as directors.
